Puppy Rearing at James River

We believe that the manner in which puppies are raised is at least as important as the genetics behind them. We go to great lengths to give our puppies the best possible start in life, as we are convinced that proper rearing and socialization of the puppy pays tremendous dividends in the adult dog.

From days 3 to 16, we practice the “Super Puppy” program, or Bio Sensory stimulation. Developed by Dr. Carmine Battaglia, this system of introducing the puppies to mild stress is proven to accelerate the development of the nervous system and strengthen the heart function of the puppies. The ultimate result is dogs which are more confident and better able to handle stress, therefore the dogs develop earlier and handle training better than dogs that did not receive the benefit of this program.

At 3 weeks of age, the dam and pups are moved into our indoor kennel facility. The pups begin to eat a weak gruel from our fingers and weaning starts at between 3 and 4 weeks of age. When the puppies are capable of interacting with their environment, a play pen is set up with a variety of toys and small obstacles. The puppies continue to have interaction with us and with other people every day.

At 5 weeks, the puppies are taken outside for short periods to play and explore. From now until the pups go to their new homes at 8 to 9 weeks, we introduce the puppies to a variety of surfaces, such as grass, gravel, dirt, asphalt, and to live pigeons and other game. We make detailed notes of each pup’s behavior when they are introduced to new experiences and terrain. We use this information to evaluate each pup’s personality and inclinations so that we can help each pup reach its potential. Additionally, we use this information to help us in selecting the pup we feel is right for each new home, by matching the pup to the new owner’s needs and preferences in a dog.

At 6 weeks we begin to separate the pups for gradually increasing periods of time, so that they learn to be confident on their own. We also spend time with each puppy as an individual, so that they begin to bond even more closely with people, instead of forming too close a bond with other dogs. This helps the puppies bond quickly with their new owners. We also introduce the puppies to a crate and bathing and nail clipping.

We follow the latest vaccination protocols, and you will receive a complete health record with your new puppy.

In short, we do everything we can to produce, happy, healthy, and confident puppies that will grow into happy, confident, and trainable dogs that are able to fulfill their genetic heritage as versatile hunting dogs and companions.
